Rare in High Grades with Clean Surfaces Hard to Find
The luster is satiny and tends to show less graininess than on some of the other early San Francisco issues. Many 1915-S Indian Head Eagles are extensively abraded and other show dark spots which are not appealing. It is extremely hard to find a piece with clean, vibrant surfaces.
Most 1915-S Indian Head Eagles have below average eye appeal and this is one of the reasons why this date is so rare in Gem Uncirculated. The typical example is well struck and lustrous but very bagmarked.
The 1915-S Indian Head Eagle is a rare date both from the standpoint of overall availability and rarity in higher grades. It is seen most often in the AU55 to MS62 range and it becomes quite scarce in MS63. MS64 examples of this date are rare and Gems are extremely rare.
