1915-S Indian Head Eagle

The 1915-S has the second lowest mintage of all Indian Eagles struck at the San Francisco Mint and is extremely difficult to locate in Gem Uncirculated grades. It is one of the few coins in the series that is not only very difficult to find in high grades, but is also a challenge to find in just about any grade above AU55.
Unlike some of the other San Francisco Eagles from this decade, no substantial hoards of this date have been found. A few pieces are found from time to time in Europe but these tend to be circulated examples with poor eye appeal.
Strong Strikes and Unique San Francisco Gold Toning
It has been stated in the past that this is not a well struck issue but this is not true as many 1915-S Eagles are seen with excellent strikes. Most pieces are fully detailed at the centers and may show noticeable wire edges on the rims as well.
Original examples show very attractive reddish-gold and orange-gold color as is typical of the San Francisco issues of this design. As the collector becomes more familiar with Indian Head Eagles, he will quickly be able to distinguish between the San Francisco, Denver and Philadelphia coins based on their color as each of the three mints produced pieces with very different hues.
