Rarity and Condition of 1912 Proof Eagles
All Proof 1912 Indian Head Eagles are seen with a dark matte finish which is unique to this year. A total of 83 Proofs were struck but a number of these were melted and survivors are very rare. An estimated 25-30 are known today with most of these in the PR64 to PR65 range. A few superb pieces are known including some that grade as high as PR67 or even PR68.
The 1912 Indian Head Eagle is a moderately scarce and decidedly undervalued issue that is not hard to find in the AU to MS63 grades. It is moderately scarce in MS64 and it is scarce in MS65. Examples that grade MS66 are very rare and there are just a small number of pieces known that grade MS67.
