1912 Indian Head Eagle

Most Philadelphia Mint issues fall in the lower tier in terms of overall rarity and this date is no exception. High grade examples of the 1912 are noticeably harder to find than the 1908 With Motto, the 1910 and the 1911.
In 1912 Indian Head Eagle, the Eagle saw a subtle but important addition to the design. The edge had two additional stars placed on it to represent the addition of New Mexico and Arizona to the Union, bringing the total number of stars from 46 to 48.
The 1912 Indian Head Eagle is usually seen with a razor sharp strike with extremely good detail on the obverse. On some pieces, the reverse is not as well struck with some minor weakness on the eagle’s front leg and the breast feathers.
Granularity and Luster Variations in 1912 Philadelphia Eagles Coins
Granularity is present on this issue, as it is with all Philadelphia Eagles but it is displayed to a lesser extent on the 1912 than it is on the previous 1911.
Some 1912 Eagles are seen with bright, frosty luster while the majority are slightly dull with a grainy texture. The color is usually a medium to deep yellow-gold with an occasional green-gold or coppery-gold piece to be found. The eye appeal is generally very good on this issue and outstanding examples are often made available to collectors.
