1911-D Indian Head Eagle

The 1911-D Indian Head Eagle is the most conditionally challenging coin in the series. There are only three coins graded MS65 or finer by PCGS and NGC has never awarded this issue a grade of Gem or better. Fewer than 300 examples can be found today in any Mint State grade and most of these are in the MS60 to MS61 range.
The 1911-D Indian Head Eagle is generally a well struck issue. On most coins, the obverse is nearly completely defined although there may be a bit of weakness on the curls above the ear of the Indian. The reverse is not as well struck with weakness almost always seen at the center with a resultant loss of detail on the wing feathers near the eagle’s breast and the leg feathers below.
Luster, Color, and Condition Insights
The luster on the few higher grade 1911-D Eagles which exist is excellent with a satiny, slightly granular texture noted. Most pieces are worn to the point that their luster is impaired.
As is often the case with Indian Head Eagles, the color is found in orange-gold hues and to a lesser extent with rose and greenish tinges.
