1910-S Indian Head Eagle

The 1910-S Indian Head Eagle was produced in large quantity and it has the highest mintage figure of all San Francisco Mint Indian Head Eagles. This mintage is deceiving as nearly all were melted during the 1930’s and just a few thousand actually still remain today.
Finding this coin in circulated grades is relatively easy and Uncirculated pieces up to MS63 are available. Once higher examples are desired, this date becomes extremely elusive and ranks as the fourth most conditionally challenging coin of the series. In Gem Uncirculated grades and finer this issue becomes extremely rare. NGC and PCGS report a mere five MS66’s combined and even fewer MS65’s. It is a substantial conditional rarity at this level and it is an issue that, in MS65 or above, is lacking from most collections of Indian Head Eagles.
1910-S Head Eagle Strike Weakness, and Surface Variations
The 1910-S Indian Head Eagle is ranked at nineteenth in terms of overall rarity because of the number of coins that were disbursed into circulation.
The strike is typically seen with a little bit of weakness underneath the neck of Liberty especially on the digits “1” and “9” in the date. The rest of the date tends to be much sharper than this.
As with many other Indian Head Eagles, the 1910-S is found mostly with frosty surfaces but there are some that have a rich satin appearance. Most are seen with the normal granular look.
