1910-D Indian Head Half Eagle

The 1910-D is a relatively common issue in the Indian Head Half Eagle series but it is scarcer than generally realized in higher grades. Most pieces grade AU55 to MS62. It is moderately scarce in MS63 but it becomes very scarce in MS64 and it is very rare in properly graded MS65. Most of the lower grade Uncirculated 1910-D Indian Head Half Eagles are from a few small hoards that were found in the late 1970’s/early 1980’s.
Striking Details and Mintmark Variations of the 1910-D Half Eagle
While not as well struck as the 1909-D, this is still a well produced issue that shows good definition on the headdress and eagle’s feathers. The mintmark is found in two distinct variations. The more common examples have a high relief mintmark that is not well-defined and which has a closed appearance. The scarcer variety has a lower relief mintmark which is more open and better defined.
The surfaces are less abraded on examples of this date than on other Denver Half Eagles of this era. That said it is still very difficult to find a 1910-D that does not show a number of scuffs and/or abrasions in the fields.
