1906-D Double Eagle – Denver Mint Issue, Rare Proofs & MS66 Finest
It is believed that a dozen proofs were struck to commemorate the introduction of this design at the Denver Mint. Only three or four are known, and these are among the most desirable proof double eagles of this type. The Official Red Book does not list these nor does the PCGS population report. The NGC census report does note two specimens including a SP68.
The 1906-D is easily located in grades up to and including MS62. It is moderately scarce in MS63 and MS64, 376, but it is rare in MS65 with just under three dozen examples currently known. The finest graded known to me are three MS66 examples.
