1906-D Double Eagle

In 1906, the Denver Mint became the fifth U.S. Mint to produce double eagles. This is, of course, a numismatically significant issue and popular with collectors because of this.
Expert’s Corner: 1906-D Double Eagle
I like this date a lot and think that its historical importance is overlooked. I would suggest purchasing a nice MS64 or MS65 at current levels and pairing this with a similar 1907-D to form a complete two-piece Denver Type Three double eagle set.
This is the better struck of the two Denver issues of this design. The quality of strike seen on most 1906-D double eagles is quite sharp with strong centers and borders. The surfaces are usually heavily bagmarked. There are some exceptions, making it is possible to locate a piece with clean surfaces. The luster has a distinctive satiny texture. Some semi-proof-like coins are known, as well as a handful of deeply reflective proof-like pieces. The natural coloration ranges from a rich orange gold to medium green-gold. The level of eye appeal is better than average. There are enough clean, lustrous pieces to satisfy date and type collectors alike.
