1900-S Double Eagle: Coloration, Eye Appeal, and Rarity in Higher Grades
The coloration on original, uncleaned 1900-S double eagles ranges from a rich rose hue to a deeper orange-gold. The level of eye appeal is generally good although it is difficult to find an example which is not heavily abraded.
The 1900-S double eagle is relatively common in grades up to MS63. It is scarce in MS64, 292 coins graded by PCGS and NGC combined, and it is very rare in properly graded MS65. Only about a dozen are known. The finest known to me is an MS67 coin graded by NGC.
