1895-S Double Eagle: Surface Quality, Luster & Rarity
The surfaces are usually very heavily abraded with deep, detracting marks seen in the fields. As with most San Francisco double eagles of this era, the luster is excellent with a rich, frosty texture seen on most 1895-S double eagles. The natural coloration ranges from rose-gold to a rich reddish-yellow hue. The eye appeal on the typical 1895-S double eagle is very good, with nice coloration and rich luster often compensating for the marks seen in the fields.
About 480 have been seen in MS64. I believe less than twenty are known in MS65 and I know of only one finer, an NGC graded MS66.
