The 1895-S closely resembles the 1894-S in terms of its overall and high grade rarity.

Expert’s Corner: 1895-S Double Eagle

I regard the 1895-S as basically a generic issue in grades up to MS62. This date can be challenging to locate in MS64, and I think that a high end coin with limited marks and good luster is a good value at its current price level. If you can find a gem, I’d suggest you buy it, as these are really hard to locate.

This date is sometimes seen with a small amount of striking weakness at the lower obverse border. The rest of the obverse, however, is usually very sharp with strong detail visible on the hair and the stars. The reverse is sometimes a bit weak on the lower denticles, but the feathers are strong.
