1893-CC Double Eagle

This is the final double eagle struck at the Carson City Mint. The 1893-CC, despite a comparatively small original mintage figure, is among the most available Carson City double eagles.
Expert’s Corner: 1893 Double Eagle
At one time, I handled impressive small groups of the 1893-CC issue in the lower uncirculated grades. Today, these same coins have increased in price and become hard to find, and I still strongly recommend the 1893-CC to collectors. The good eye appeal of this date and popularity of being the last Carson City double eagle makes it a perfect choice for the new collector or the experienced collector.
This is among the best produced Carson City double eagles. Most are well made with boldly defined central details and sharp borders. The surfaces on the typical 1893-CC double eagle show many marks but are not as extensively abraded as other CC double eagles from this era. An unusually large number have mint-made copper spotting, or areas of discoloration, which range from barely noticeable to heavy. These are not considered detrimental to a coin’s grade unless they are visually detracting. The luster is very good, with textures that range from frosty to nearly fully proof-like. The natural coloration is a rich yellow-gold or medium orange hue. This coloration can be extremely attractive and helps to make this an issue which sometimes has far above average eye appeal. It is possible to locate a really good looking 1893-CC double eagle, and with some patience the collector should be able to do so.
