1892-CC Double Eagle

The 1892-CC is the second scarcest Carson City double eagle from this decade, trailing only the 1891-CC.
Expert’s Corner: 1892-CC Double Eagle
I have handled many nice 1892-CC double eagles over the years, but I am noticing that the supply of high quality pieces, especially in uncirculated, is quickly diminishing. I like this date in XF40 and above and would suggest that potential buyers look for pieces with good detail and minimal detracting abrasions.
Most examples show a sharp overall strike. The centers are usually fully detailed while the obverse stars and borders are sharp as well. Some may show slight weakness on the obverse borders from 6:00 to 11:00. The surfaces on most 1892-CC double eagles are heavily abraded. A number show mint-made copper spots or areas of discoloration in the planchet. The luster is found in a variety of textures including frosty and semi-proof-like.
Carson City Double Eagles Coloration, and Collector Appeal
The coins with frosty surfaces are more desired by collectors, as the abrasions are not as heavily accentuated as they are on the reflective, proof-like pieces. There are a few known which are nearly fully proof-like, having very impressive visual appeal. The coloration on uncleaned, original pieces ranges from deep green-gold to a medium orange gold hue. The level of eye appeal is better than that seen on many Carson City double eagles. There are some attractive pieces available from time to time, and their relative affordability makes them popular with type collectors who are seeking a single choice CC double eagle for their Type Three set.
