1891-CC Double Eagle: Scarcity in Circulated and Rare in Mint State
The 1891-CC is a bit more available in lower grades than one might think, given its small original mintage figure of just 5,000 coins. It is an issue that didn’t see extensive circulation and is seldom found below the EF grades. It is scarce in the middle to higher AU grades and quite rare in uncirculated. In earlier editions of this book, we suggested that as many as 50-60 were known in uncirculated, but this figure now seems a bit high. The 1891-CC is rare in MS60 to MS61 and very rare in properly graded MS62. There are an estimated 12 to 15 known in this grade. The two finest known to me are a NGC MS63 and a PCGS MS63 which is owned by a collector who specializes in Liberty Head double eagles.
