1891-CC Double Eagle

The 1891-CC has the second lowest mintage figure of any double eagle from the Carson City Mint, trailing only the legendary 1870-CC.
Expert’s Corner: 1891-CC Double Eagle
A decade ago, it seemed that this low mintage date was occasionally located, but it has become harder to find the 1891-CC in any grade today. I recommend this date in grades as low as EF40, given its scarcity and relative good value. In uncirculated, I love the 1891-CC and strongly recommend purchasing one if available.
The quality of strike for this date is generally above average. The central obverse is sharp with much better detail seen on the hair strands of Liberty than on most Type Three double eagles from this mint. The border is often weakly impressed, especially on the first three and final three stars. The reverse is also well struck with most of the central details up and bold. The surfaces are nearly always very heavily bagmarked. Some 1891-CC double eagles are seen with toning spots or grease stains. These are mint-made and do not affect the value unless they are dramatic. The luster is above average and is seen most often with a frosty texture. The coloration on uncleaned, original pieces is a pleasing rich orange-gold, sometimes with soft rose undertones. Many 1891-CC double eagles have been cleaned at one time and show a “washed-out” appearance. The level of eye appeal for this date is generally somewhat below average, due to the fact that many are severely abraded and may show mint-made spotting or a lack of originality.
