Once Elusive, Now Known from European Discoveries
Until the early 1990s, the 1884-CC was rarely seen in uncirculated. Two small hoards were found around 1992-1993 in Europe with as many as four dozen MS60 or better pieces, greatly increasing the availability of Uncirculated 1884-CC double eagles.
The 1884-CC is relatively scarce in all circulated grades although it is becoming harder to find properly graded AU coins with good eye appeal. This date is moderately scarce in MS60 to MS61 and rare in MS62. The finest known examples of this date grade MS63, and there are an estimated 14 to 16 known at this level.
