1884-CC Double Eagle

The 1884-CC is among the most available double eagles from the Carson City Mint. It is also one of the easier issues to find in mint-state grades.
Expert’s Corner: 1884-CC Double Eagle
This is one of my favorite “starter” Carson City double eagles because of the way it is made and because it is easier to find with nice surfaces than most of the double eagles from this mint. I highly recommend it to the new collector who is “sticking his toe into the water” in regards to Liberty Head double eagles!
This is one of the best produced double eagles from the Carson City Mint. The hair and feather detail are usually nearly complete while the stars on both the obverse and reverse are sharp. Many are heavily abraded, but it is possible to find a coin with relatively clean surfaces. Due to this fact, the 1884-CC is popular with type collectors who want to own one nice, higher grade CC double eagle for their set.
1884-CC Double Eagle: Rich Coloration and Strong Eye Appeal
The luster on higher grade examples is excellent. Many have a rich, frosty texture with a strong cartwheel effect. Some semi-proof-like pieces are known, but these are less appealing as they tend to accentuate abrasions in the fields. The coloration seen most often is a medium orange gold or green-gold hue. Some 1884-CC double eagles have mint-made copper spots or grease stains on the surfaces. The overall level of eye appeal is well above average for a Carson City gold coin of any denomination, making this an especially popular issue.
