Expert’s Corner: 1883-CC Double Eagle
This is one of my favorite Carson City double eagles for the new collector who wants a great introduction to this fascinating series. This is due to the fact that it is generally well made with good luster and an above-average appearance. I have noticed the demand spiking upwards for nice 1883-CC double eagles in recent years, and I feel that this is a date that will continue to show great appreciation in the future.
The quality of strike seen on this issue tends to be less good than on the 1882-CC. There is often weakness on the hair near the ear and on the brow of Liberty. On some coins, a few of the obverse stars have weakness on the radial lines. The reverse is sharper although there is often not full detail present on the neck of the eagle and the wings just to the left of the shield. The surfaces on most 1883-CC double eagles are very heavily abraded, making it hard to find a piece that has an acceptable appearance. The luster is average quality.
Collector Demand for Premium Quality Pieces
Most 1883-CC double eagles have a distinctive frosty texture while a smaller number are somewhat reflective. There are a limited number of fully proof-like coins known; these are very rare, but they often are negatively impacted by abrasions and have poor eye appeal as a result. The coloration on uncleaned original pieces is a rich yellow-gold or medium greenish hue. A few 1883-CC double eagles have rich coppery overtones. It is possible to find an example of this date that has good eye appeal. “Premium quality” coins are in strong demand, typically bringing a premium from collectors.
