1882-CC Double Eagle

After a two-year hiatus, production of double eagles at the Carson City Mint resumed in 1882. This is among the more available CC double eagles, but it is rare in higher grades.
Expert’s Corner: 1882-CC Double Eagle
Most of the higher grade 1882-CC double eagles are placed in private collections, and examples grading MS61 and finer rarely come onto the market. I highly recommend this date in grades as low as XF40, but only if the piece in question has reasonably clean surfaces.
The 1882-CC is among the better struck Carson City double eagles. On the obverse, the hair shows nearly full detail and the stars are sharp with many of the stars showing full radial lines. The reverse is also fully detailed. The surfaces are typically abraded, and many of these marks are placed in inopportune positions such as in the left obverse field. It is possible to locate an 1882-CC that isn’t riddled with marks, but such coins have become difficult to obtain.
1882-CC Double Eagle: Texture, Color, and Type Coin Appeal
The luster on most pieces is frosty in texture. Some have a more subdued grainy texture with slightly semi proof-like reflectiveness noted in the fields. The natural coloration ranges from orange-gold to a deep green gold hue. This is the rare Carson City issue that can be found with good overall eye appeal, and the collector should be patient when waiting for the “right” coin. Due to the fact that this is a well-made issue, it is popular with collectors looking for a single higher grade piece for type purposes.
