1880-S Double Eagle

All of the early (pre-1884) San Francisco Type Three double eagles are scarcer than generally believed, and the 1880-S is no exception.
Expert’s Corner: 1880-S Double Eagle
As I have stated elsewhere in this book, I am a big fan of the early San Francisco issues of this type, and I like the 1880-S in MS61 and above. I suggest that collectors look for examples with fewer marks than usual.
This date is often found with some scattered weakness of strike. On the obverse, the hair near the forehead and at the top of Liberty’s head can show some weakness. The obverse stars are often weak at the centers and may not show full radial lines. The reverse tends to be better struck and is often fully detailed.
The 1880-S Double Eagle: Luster, Coloration, and Collector Premiums
The surfaces on nearly every known 1880-S double eagle have deep, obtrusive marks. Many also show mint-made copper spots or black grease stains. These are not considered to be detrimental unless they are severe. The luster is generally good with higher grade coins showing a frosty texture; some have a more grainy texture. The coloration is most often a pleasing rose-green shade and, less often, it can be green-gold or medium orange-gold. The level of eye appeal is typical for a San Francisco double eagle of this era. Nice coins do exist, but these are very hard to find, and they deserve a strong premium. Most are very heavily marked which tends to impact the eye appeal.
