1876-S Double Eagle

The 1876-S is the final issue in the Type Two Double Eagle series which adds to its popularity to many collectors. With the second highest mintage figure of any date in this series, it is the second most common coin.
The 1876-S has a quality of strike which is very similar to the 1875-S. Some examples are known which show very good strikes; others have strikes which show weakness on the hair of Liberty, like so many Type Two Double Eagles. The surfaces on many examples of this date are heavily abraded with deep marks visible in the obverse fields and on the cheek of Liberty.
