1933 Indian Head – Rare, Frosty, and Highly Coveted
The luster is outstanding with a very rich, frosty texture seen on all surviving pieces. The natural coloration is a medium to deep orange-gold with some greenish-gold undertones. A few pieces have been seen with reddish copper spots on both the obverse and on the reverse.
Due to the rarity of this date, eye appeal is not as great a factor as it is on other Indian Head Eagles. In addition, most 1933 Indian Head Eagles are attractive coins although some have abrasions which can be considered fairly detracting. Collectors will not have many opportunities to purchase examples of this date, though, so eye appeal does not play as great a role as it does on a Condition Rarity such as the 1913-S.
There is a single NGC MS66 graded that represents the Finest Known as of March 2010. The 1933 Indian Head Eagle is the rarest Indian Head Eagle in terms of overall rarity. It is a celebrated issue for a number of reasons. It is the only Indian Head gold coin minted in 1933. Ownership of a 1933 is considered one of the highlights of an advanced set of Indian Head Eagles.
