1920-S Indian Head Eagle: One of the Rarest Dates in High Grade
The luster on higher grade examples is generally quite good with a rich, frosty texture seen on a number of coins. A smaller number of coins have a subdued, grainy texture which is not especially attractive. The natural coloration is a medium to deep rose and orange-gold hue.
For the serious date collector, the 1920-S Indian Head Eagle will prove to be one of the hardest Indian Head Eagles to find. Only a few examples are offered for sale each year and the few high grade pieces which exist tend to be placed in private collections and held for a long period of time.
The 1920-S Indian Head Eagle is a scarce coin in all grades and a rare one in Uncirculated. It is most often seen in AU55 to MS61. It is quite rare in the MS62 to MS64 range and it is extremely rare in Gem Uncirculated. In fact, it is doubtful if more than a dozen Gems exist. The finest known is a PCGS MS67.
