The 1915 is the second to last Indian Head Half Eagle struck at the Philadelphia Mint. It is among the more common issues in the series in terms of its overall rarity but it is far scarcer in high grades than issues such as the 1908, 1909, 1911 and 1913.

This is an extremely well made issue which generally shows a very sharp strike on both the obverse and the reverse. Both the centers and the peripheries are nicely defined with strong details.

Characteristics and Surface Texture, Color Variations

The surfaces are often very slightly granular but not as much so as on the 1914 Half Eagles. Many pieces have a number of abrasions but it is possible to find an example that is relatively clean.

The luster is extremely good and, in fact, it rivals nearly any issue in the series. It is sometimes extremely frosty and other times it is grainy with a good deal of “flash.” A wide range of colors have been seen on original, uncleaned pieces. The hues most often observed are green and rose-orange. A small amount of unusual—and really attractive—coppery hued pieces are known as well.
