1914-D Quarter Eagle: Rarity and Condition Insights
A rather broad range of coloration has been seen on this issue. Some 1914-D Indian Head Quarter Eagles have medium to deep yellow-gold color while others are a darker green gold hue. Many of the nicest pieces known have very attractive medium to deep coppery-gold color and advanced collectors prefer this look to the other two described above.
The eye appeal for the 1914-D ranges from below average to average. Most are not well struck and show numerous abrasions on the surfaces. However, many have very good luster and color. It is not really all that hard to find an attractive 1914-D in the Mint State-63 to Mint State-64 range, but true Gems are extremely scarce and this will prove to be one of the hardest dates in the series for the connoisseur.
To qualify for the Condition Census, a 1914-D Indian Head Quarter Eagle must be Mint State-65.
