1914-D Half Eagle: Coloration, Eye Appeal, and Rarity Insights
The coloration found on this issue tends to be a medium to deep greenish-gold with orange-gold undertones. A few show very attractive coppery-rose color and these are considered to be the most desirable 1914-D Indian Head Half Eagles.
The level of eye appeal for the 1914-D is slightly below average. Most seen have good overall detail and decent color but tend to be a bit granular in texture and have below average luster. When a very attractive piece is offered to collectors, it generally brings well in excess of current published catalog values.
In the lower Uncirculated grades, the 1914-D Indian Head Half Eagle is common and even MS63 pieces are fairly easy to locate. In MS64 this date is moderately scarce and compares favorably to the 1914. In MS65 it is quite rare and is harder to locate than its Philadelphia counterpart.
