1914-D Indian Eagle: Scarcity and Mint Flaws in Higher Grades
The color varies from mostly faint greenish-gold to an attractive reddish orange hue. As most examples saw wide circulation this date is plagued with heavy abrasions and generally doesn’t come with outstanding eye appeal, though the excellent mint luster often outweighs the typically heavily marked surfaces.
There is an interesting planchet flaw present on many 1914-D Indian Head Eagles that appears as an indentation on the “19” in the date. This is caused by the minting process and it is not considered to be a significant defect. The 1914-D can be found with relative ease in grades up to MS64. It is actually quite scarce in MS65 and it is very rare above this.
