1913-S Half Eagle: Color, Eye Appeal, and Rarity Challenges
1913-S Indian Head Half Eagles are often found with a light orange-gold and rose coloration. A number of lower grade pieces have a “dirty” appearance, probably as a result of improper storage in bags or bank vaults.
The level of eye appeal on this date is below average and, along with the 1912-S, it is probably the hardest Indian Head Half Eagle to find with a good overall appearance. There are a very small number of pieces known that are well struck and have good color and these typically command enormous premiums on the infrequent occasions they are offered for sale.
The 1913-S Half Eagle is usually seen in AU grades and it is scarce in the lower Uncirculated grades. It becomes extremely scarce in MS63 and it is very rare in MS65. Gems are extremely rare.
