1913-S Indian Head Eagle: Luster, Rarity, and Condition
The luster on this issue, while noticeably better than the 12-S, is moderately subdued when compared to the other coins in the series.
The eye appeal on this issue tends to be well below average. The typical example has been roughly handled and shows numerous scuffmarks on the surfaces which affect the luster and color as well. The few known high quality 1913-S Indian Head Eagles are extremely attractive, so nice pieces are available, albeit for a heavy price.
The 1913-S Indian Head Eagle is regarded as one of the great condition rarities in all of the 20th century US gold series. It is moderately scarce even in circulated grades and the small numbers of Uncirculated pieces that exist consist mainly of MS60 to MS62 pieces. In MS63, this date is rare and it is very rare in MS64.
