1913 Indian Head Eagle

As is the case with every other Philadelphia Mint Eagle, the 1913 Indian Head Eagle is considered a common issue with a mintage of 442,000 and it can be obtained at all levels up to Gem Uncirculated (MS65). Once better than Gem examples are desired, however, the coin becomes quite elusive. Surprisingly, there is but a single MS67 example graded by PCGS with none higher and NGC has seen none higher than MS66 as of March 2010.
The lone PCGS MS67 example noted above came out of hiding in 2006. The few MS66 examples which have been available to collectors have also brought strong prices.
1913 Indian Head Eagle: Rarity and Exceptional Luster
It should be noted that an accumulation of high grade examples has hit the market in recent years. This accumulation has likely done little to alter the coin’s conditional rarity but it is still worthy of mention.
The 1913 Indian Head Eagle is almost always highly lustrous, as are most other Philadelphia Mint Eagles but this issue has among the best luster of any coin in the series and, as such, it is popular with type collectors. The strike on these coins is superb and all details can be seen in exceptionally sharp clarity.
