1912 Indian Head Half Eagle: Striking Appeal and High-Grade Proofs
The 1912 Indian Head Half Eagle has average eye appeal. It is well struck and tends to have good luster but, as mentioned above, its appearance is very distinctive and this look may not appeal to all collectors.
This is a common date in all Uncirculated grades up to and including MS63. MS64 pieces are scarce and MS-65’s are rare. Unlike the 1908 and the 1909, this is a date that is nearly unknown above MS65 and the connoisseur will be lucky to find an accurately graded MS65.
There were 144 Proofs struck. They use a fine sandblast finish which is similar to that seen on the 1913. An estimated 35-45 Proofs are known with most of these in the PR64 to PR66 range. There are more very high grade Proofs known of this date than any other Indian Head Half Eagle with a number known that grade PR67. These remarkable coins are popular with type collectors seeking a single very high grade Proof Indian Head Half Eagle for their set.
