Coloration and Eye Appeal of the 1911-D Quarter Eagle
The 1911-D Indian Head Quarter Eagle is most often seen with medium to deep orange-gold coloration. A few are also known that show a more sedate medium green-gold hue. It has become very hard to locate an example that has original color as many have been cleaned, dipped or enhanced in recent years.
The quality of eye appeal seen on the 1911-D Quarter Eagle varies greatly. There are some very handsome coins known in all grade ranges, but most collectors wind-up with an example that is very low-end for the grade. It is our strong belief that since this is the key issue in the Indian Head Quarter Eagle set the collector should stretch and try to buy the nicest example that is feasible. An otherwise unexceptional set can be made very desirable with the addition of a very nice 1911-D.
To qualify for the Condition Census, a 1911-D Indian Head Quarter Eagle must grade Mint State-66. A very high end Mint State-65 piece may qualify as well.
