The 1910 Indian Head Half Eagle is comparable to the 1909 in terms of its overall rarity but it is scarcer in Uncirculated, especially in grades above MS63.

This is a very well struck issue that generally shows complete definition on the obverse and reverse details. On a small number of pieces, there is weakness seen on the eagle’s lower neck feathers and at the junction of the leg and chest.

The surfaces on most pieces show a number of scuffmarks and some have deep scratches. This is a very hard coin to find with clean surfaces but the patient collector should be able to locate a piece that does not have major detracting abrasions.

Examining the Luster and Coloration of the 1910 Half Eagle

The luster seen on the 1910 Half Eagle has a soft frosty texture that tends to be a little less vibrant than that seen on the 1909 Half Eagles. A small number of 1910’s are known which have a satiny texture that somewhat resembles the appearance of a Roman Finish proof.

Coloration ranges from light yellow gold and a deeper orange and green hue. Many pieces have been cleaned or dipped at one time and locating examples with original color is difficult.
