Luster, Coloration, and Eye Appeal of the 1909-S Half Eagle
The luster is excellent with higher grade pieces displaying rich mint frost. When this date is found nice - which is really not all that often - it tends to be very attractive.
Coloration on the 1909-S Indian Head Half Eagle is most often a medium to deep rose and coppery orange-gold. Many have been dipped at one time and, as a result, no longer display this pleasing rich natural coloration.
The eye appeal seen on the typical 1909-S Indian Head Half Eagle is somewhat below average. This is mainly due to the fact that most have somewhat impaired luster. As stated above, there are some very pleasing examples known and the few Gems that exist can be considered among the more attractive San Francisco Half Eagles of this type.
