1909 Half Eagle: Proof Coin Characteristics
The 1909 Indian Head Half Eagle tends to have average to slightly above average eye appeal. It is a generally well produced issue with decent color and luster but most have a number of marks in the fields. This will prove to be an easy date for most collectors to locate with the exception of perfectionists who seek a coin better than MS65. In this case, the 1909 will be a very elusive member of the Indian Half Eagle set.
Only 78 Proofs were produced and it is unlikely that more than thirty or so exist. Most of these pieces are in the PR64 to PR65 range. Examples that grade PR66 and higher are extremely rare. The finish seen on Proofs of this year is referred to as Roman Gold and it is unique to gold coins dated 1909 and 1910. It is semi-brilliant with a satiny texture.
