There were just 74 Proofs struck and most are seen in a lighter Roman or Satin finish. Two dark Matte Proofs are believed to exist as well. An estimated 30-35 Proofs are known to exist with most of these in the PR64 to PR65 range. In Gem Proof, this issue is exceedingly rare.

The 1909 Indian Gold Eagle is considerably scarcer than the 1910-1915 Philadelphia issues. It is usually seen in AU55 to MS63 grades. It is scarce and much underrated in MS64 and properly graded MS65 pieces are very rare. There are a few superb MS66 examples known but these tend to be in strong hands and are seldom offered for sale. The 1909 Indian Gold Eagle will prove to be a challenging issue for the collector who is seeking to assemble a very high quality set of Indian Head Eagles.
