1908-S Indian Head Eagle: Eye Appeal and Rarity in High Grades
The eye appeal of the 1908-S Indian Head Gold is as high as for any date in the Indian Head series. There are a number of pieces available which are fully struck, extremely lustrous and superbly toned. These pieces would make great type coins for the collector seeking a single superb example of this magnificent design.
The 1908-S Indian Head Gold is actually more available than one might expect. It is seen in grades all the way down to VF and EF, proving that it saw a good deal of circulation. It is relatively easy to locate in AU55 to MS62 but it becomes scarce in MS63 and MS64. Gems are rare but are actually more plentiful than nearly any other San Francisco issue of this type. There are a small number of truly superb pieces in existence including a few that grade as high as MS68 to MS69.
