Striking Beauty and Rarity in U.S. Gold
Most 1907 Wire Edge Eagles are found with such outstanding strikes that their classification as Mint State coins and not as Proofs is sometimes contested. All examples known possess virtually the same appearance of strike overall.
Although many examples have numerous abrasions and dings from rough handling over the past 100 years, there are many premium pieces that are remarkably well preserved and mark-free. All Indian Head Eagles of this variety display swirl-like die polishing marks in the fields that actually add brightness to the coins.
The luster on these pieces is almost always extraordinary and is most often described as bright and heavily frosted. The natural coloration is a rich yellow-gold but there are also a number that can be found with a beautiful reddish patina.
These coins can always be found for a price but any nice example is sure to hold a prominent role in any major collection of U.S. gold. Probably more than half of the original mintage figure of 500 coins is still known to exist. The 1907 Wire Edge is most often seen in MS61 to MS64 grades. Gems are scarce but are more obtainable than a number of other dates in this series. A few superb pieces are known and these are among the most highly prized issues in the entire series.
