1907 Rolled Edge: A Legendary Rarity and Trophy Coin
They are most often weakly struck and lack the level of detail that was present on the Wire Rim coins, especially in the central hair details and in the eagle’s wing feathers.
Most coins have a bright yellow-gold color but many can be found with a sunset-like reddish overlay. There is a single Proof known of this variety. It is not known exactly why it was minted but it was likely a trial piece that has been remarkably preserved after over the past century.
The 1907 Rolled Edge is a legendary rarity, which is considered as one of the true “trophy coins” among 20th century United States gold issues. It is widely believed that only 50 or so of the coins originally struck were spared from the melting pot and most of these are known today. The typical survivor grades MS64 to MS65 and a few superb Gems are known to exist.
