1907 Double Eagle

While numismatically significant as the final year of issue for Philadelphia Liberty Head double eagles, the 1907 is among the most common issues of this design.
Expert’s Corner: 1907 Double Eagle
An interesting set would be to combine the popular 1907 Liberty Head double eagle with the Saint- Gaudens issue of this year to create a transitional duo. The set can be further sweetened by including a nice 1907 High Relief.
The strike seen on most 1907 Liberty Head double eagles is very sharp. There is usually sharp detail on the hair of Liberty and on the eagle’s feathers. The surfaces typically show numerous abrasions with many coins having deep marks in the obverse fields. The luster is frosty in texture. Some semi-proof-like and even fully proof-like coins exist, but these tend to have poor eye appeal due to heavy marks on the surfaces.

The coloration on uncleaned pieces ranges from medium green gold to a lighter orange-gold hue. The eye appeal for the date is above average. It is easy to locate a very choice 1907 Liberty Head double eagle with good luster, clean surfaces and pleasing coloration. There were 78 proofs struck. An estimated 45-50 are known, with most in the PR63 to PR64 range. Gems are very rare.
The 1907 Liberty Head double eagle is very common in grades up to and including MS64, 2,573 known. Gems are quite undervalued and rare, as there are currently 56 known in MS65. The finest known examples are four MS65+ coins seen by PCGS and one MS65+ seen by NGC.
