Expert’s Corner: 1907-D Double Eagle
This coin has a lot going for it. It is the last Denver made Liberty Head double eagle. It has a good rarity factor. It was made in a transitional year. Cool short sets need this coin.
This issue is usually well struck but not as sharp overall as the 1906-D. On the coins which are not fully detailed, areas of weakness include the top of the hair, the inside portions of the wings and some of the radial lines on the obverse stars. The surfaces are usually heavily abraded; however, some smooth, clean pieces can be found. The luster is very frosty in texture. A few semi-proof-like pieces exist, and there are a very small number of fully proof-like coins. The coloration on original 1907-D double eagles can be incredibly attractive. It ranges in hue from rich orange-gold to medium yellow-gold. The level of eye appeal for this date is above average. It is a date which can be found in gem Uncirculated with just a marginal amount of effort.
