1906 Double Eagle

The popular low mintage 1906 was formerly very undervalued in comparison to issues such as the 1902 and the 1905 double eagles. It has become better known in recent years but remains a good value within this series with a great rarity factor.
Expert’s Corner: 1906 Double Eagle
This is the third rarest 20th century Type Three double eagle after the 1902 and the 1905. In my opinion, all three of these issues are underrated and will increase in value as more people begin to collect a “short set” of 20th century double eagles.
The quality of strike seen on this issue varies. There are some very well struck examples; however, there are also some which show weakness at the centers and at certain areas of the denticles on both the obverse and the reverse. The surfaces are often heavily abraded. The luster is very satiny, and, if not disturbed by abrasions, can be very pleasing. The coloration on original, uncleaned pieces is often a medium to deep green-gold hue. The level of eye appeal on the 1906 double eagle is below average. Most have numerous marks, and a number have been cleaned or dipped. Any coin with relatively clean surfaces and original luster is scarce and desirable.
