1904 Double Eagle – Proof Rarity and High-Grade Survivors
There were 98 proofs struck. Collectors tend to assume that these are common due to the availability of proofs of this year, but this is not the case. There are around five dozen known with most in the PR63 to PR64 range. Gems are very rare.
This date is extremely common in grades up to and including MS65, having a combined population of over 13,600. It is scarce in MS66, 455 graded, but more are available in this very high grade than any other Liberty Head double eagle. It is extremely rare in MS67 with three graded by PCGS and two by NGC.
