Above-Average Eye Appeal & Rare Gem Survivors
The level of eye appeal seen on the typical 1899-S double eagle is above average. It is not hard to locate an example with a good strike, acceptable surfaces, fiery luster and pleasing color.
The 1899-S is relatively common in grades up to and including MS63. Still, PCGS and NGC combined have only graded 852 MS64 in the last 35 years. That is less than 25 per year. Gems are quite rare with only 14 having been seen by both PCGS and NGC combined. There are three superb pieces known. Two are graded MS68 by NGC and the third is a PCGS MS67 from the Eliasberg collection.
