1899 Double Eagle

The 1899 is among the most common Type Three Liberty Head double eagles. Its main appeal lies in the fact that it is an affordable issue with an end of the 19th century issuance.
Expert’s Corner: 1899 Double Eagle
This date is one of the most popular 19th century double eagles which can be found in MS65 for a reasonable price. If you’d like to “spice up” your date set with a very high grade coin, this is one that is worth seeking out in MS65.
The quality of strike seen on this date varies greatly. Some show weakness on the obverse border, and the denticles are not fully delineated. A few stars on the obverse are also seen with weakness at the centers. Others are very well struck. The surfaces are typically abraded, but this issue can be found with fewer marks than seen on other double eagles of this era. The luster is often grainy in texture, and it has an appearance unique to this specific date. Original, uncleaned coins show color ranging from green-gold to a pleasing orange-gold hue. The level of eye appeal is above average although some collectors may not appreciate the grainy texture described above.
Proof Rarity, Overdate Myth & Business-Strike Availability
A total of 84 proof 1899 double eagles were produced. There are around 40 known with many of these in the PR63 to PR64. Gems are rare. There are a small number of superb pieces known. These coins graded PR67 Ultra Cameo by NGC are probably the finest known coins for the date. An 1899/8 overdate has been claimed but doesn’t exist.
Business-strike 1899 double eagles are extremely common in grades up to and including MS64. Both major grading services, PCGS and NGC, combined have graded slightly over 4,500 in MS64. Gems are rare, and PCGS and NGC have graded about 225. Only three have been graded MS66.
