1898-S Double Eagle: Eye Appeal, Varieties & Finest Known
The coloration on uncleaned pieces ranges from a rich orange-gold to a medium rose-gold hue. This color can be amongst the most pleasing on any Type Three double eagle. The level of eye appeal for this date tends to be very good and, as a result, this is the perfect date to use as a type coin if the collector wants to avoid the very common 1904.
Varieties are known with a normal date and with repunching on the base of the 1 in the date. This latter variety doesn’t appear to be scarce and is not recognized by PCGS or NGC. Only one coin has graded MS67 and it was originally obtained at face value from the San Francisco Mint at the time of issue by John Clapp, Sr. and it later became part of the famous Eliasberg collection.
