1897-S Double Eagle – Varieties, Populations, and High-Grade Rarity
At least two varieties are known. One has a normal date, and this is very common. The scarcer variety has repunching on the 1 in the date. It is not recognized by PCGS or NGC and is considered to be a minor variety.
There are two pieces known in PCGS MS67 holders; one of these was obtained directly from the San Francisco Mint in 1897 by John Clapp, Sr. and was part of the famous Eliasberg collection.
The 1897-S double eagle is relatively common in grades up to and including MS64 with a combined PCGS and NGC population of nearly 1,454 coins. Properly graded MS65s are extremely scarce with less than 45 examples known.
