Expert’s Corner: 1897 Double Eagle
This issue is basically a “generic” in MS62, but nice MS64 examples are not easily found. These seem like good value in this grade, especially in comparison to an MS65.
This issue is found with a sharp strike. Most show complete details on both the obverse and the reverse. The surfaces are typically abraded but less so than on other dates of this era. The luster usually has a soft, frosty texture. Less often, it is seen with a grainy finish. The coloration on uncleaned, original pieces ranges from a bright rose-gold to a more even orange-gold hue. The level of eye appeal I above average and this is an easy issue to locate with a good overall appearance.
1897 Double Eagle – Varieties, Proofs, and Rarity in Gem Grades
Two varieties are known. The more common has a normal date. The scarcer second variety shows repunching on the 89. On some pieces, this repunching is clearly visible to the naked eye, and such coins are scarce. Neither PCGS or NGC recognizes this variety, and until at least one of the services does, it will not be in demand.
A total of 86 proofs were struck. There are around 35 or so known today, with about ten of these being gems. The finest known proof 1897 double eagle is graded PR67 Cameo by NGC.
The 1897 double eagle is extremely common in grades up to and including MS62. It is seen with some degree of regularity in MS64, having a combined PCGS and NGC population of 790 as this is written. Gems are very rare with about 25 MS65s in existence.
