1892-S Double Eagle: Date Variety and High-Grade Rarity
A variety is known which shows a line in the top loop of the 2 in the date. This has been called an “overdate” in the past. It seems unlikely that this is an actual 1892/1-S.
The 1892-S is common in grades up to, and including MS62. It is scarce in properly graded MS64, about 225 seen, and about 30 are known in MS65. There is one gem graded MS66 by NGC. A number of lustrous examples were part of the Saddle Ridge Hoard.
